Batley School of Art
Batley School of Art (now a part of Kirklees College) has a rich history rooted in technical education in Kirklees, dating back to 1825. It became known for its art and design courses, including a highly-regarded BA Hons Contemporary Photographic Arts degree, until the art and design programs moved to Dewsbury in the early 2000's. The school, which was once located at the Wheelwright Grammar School site, has produced notable alumni like the founders of Hornsea Pottery. The school's history is closely tied to the broader narrative of Kirklees College, which is celebrating 200 years of technical education in 2025.
The art and design provision, including the photography program, eventually moved to Dewsbury. Batley School of Art as a separate entity, ceased to exist in 2018.
