Burnley School of Art

The Burnley Mechanics' Institute was established in 1855. It aimed to provide better education and skills for the rapidly expanding workforce to meet the needs of a changing society during the industrial revolution. Local people flocked to the venue to enjoy classes in arts, science and technology and Burnley Mechanics became the focus of the town’s cultural activity. Designed by Architect James Green (1822-1886) of Todmorden, it later evolved into a Technical Institute that housed the Burnley School of Art, alongside other departments that included textiles, mining, engineering, and commerce. The college moved to its current location on Princess Way in 2009, continuing its role in further education and vocational training. The original building has been repurposed over the years and is now a popular venue for entertainment, special events, and community activities.
