Harrow School of Art

Marion Hewlett (1843-1915) ran a branch of the Band of Mercy, an organisation that looked after horses and donkeys, a forerunner of the RSPCA. Young people attended her meetings which she saw as an opportunity for social and educational activities. She subsequently began art and domestic science classes for girls in Harrow in 1887 although boys were admitted. The School has seen many changes of the years and has been known variously as Harrow Technical School, Harrow Technical College and School of Art, Harrow College of Technology and Art and Harrow College of Higher Education. In the late 1990's the College merged with polytechnics including the Polytechnic of Central London, formerly known as Regent Street Polytechnic which in turn, two years later, became the University of Westminster. Alumni include from the world of fashion, Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren and Rolling Stone Drummer Charlie Watts who studied Graphic Design and from a bygone era sisters Anna and Doris Zinkeisen.
