Ipswich School of Art

The school was founded in 1859 was jointly housed in a purpose-built mid-Victorian building, combining the functions of museum, library and art school. The library was removed in the early 20th century but the Art School and the Museum continued to share premises into the 1970's. When the Museum and Art School were joined the museum's collections provided direct inspiration for the work of both students and the staff. Some of the early works of Maggi Hambling and the bird sculptures of Bernard Reynolds provide such proof. The School of Art has attracted many talented artists, sculptors and printmakers to its staff, including Bernard Reynolds, Leonard Squirrel, Lawrence Self and Colin Moss who are represented in the collection. Other notable staff and alumni include Jeffrey Camp, Frederick Cotman, Denise Broadley and musician Brian Eno.
