Liverpool Polytechnic

This institution's history stretches back with roots to the Liverpool Mechanics' and Apprentices' Library, founded in 1823. Liverpool Polytechnic was formally established on April 1, 1970, by the merger of several local colleges. These included the Regional College of Technology, the College of Building, and the College of Commerce. The Polytechnic became Liverpool John Moores University in 1992. The change in status was made possible by the UK's Further and Higher Education Act 1992, which allowed polytechnics to become universities. After gaining university status, the new establishment was named after Sir John Moores, a prominent Liverpool businessman and philanthropist who founded the Littlewoods retail and football pools empire. He was also an Honorary Fellow of the Polytechnic.

Artistic staff and alumni include Michael Yeomans, Heinz Koppel, Maurice Cockrill and John Baum.
