Newton Abbot School of Art

The arts school was originally part of the Passmore Edwards Public Library, which opened in 1904. The building was designed by Cornish architect Silvanus Trevail (1851-1903), who died shortly before its opening. The building, a gift from philanthropist John Passmore Edwards (1823-1911), was designed as both a library and a Science, Art, and Technical School. The Art School closed in 1971, and the building, now known as the Passmore Edwards Centre, continues as a community hub serving as a focal point for various activities, including its library. The art school moved to Torquay and became the art department of Torquay Boys' Grammar School. Artists of note who were educated or taught there included Wycliffe Egginton and Nathaniel Davies.
