Preston School of Art

Initially established as the 'Preston Institution for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge', it later evolved into the Harris School of Art. It was designed by John Welch (1810-1855) and opened in 1849. It was later expanded and funded by Edmund Robert Harris (1804-1877) with the stipulation that it be used for educational purposes. Harris, as his name suggests, was to become the principal benefactor of the Harris Museum and Art Gallery.

The building was eventually acquired and used as a Department of Performing Arts by the University of Central Lancashire before being sold. A group called "The Friends of the Harris School of Art" is currently working to purchase the building and reopen it as a community-based project.
