Yellow Door Studio
Originated by Frank Spenlove-Spenlove in 1896 as the Spenlove School of Modern Landscape Art it was more commonly known as the Yellow Door School . It was originally located at No. 34 (later No.80), Beckenham High Street, Kent. Circa 1919, it moved to Victoria Street, London. The School offered tuition in the studio and by correspondence. It was one of the first private art schools to be opened near London, and allegedly no fewer than fourteen thousand students passed through the studio, travelling from Britain, Russia, Japan, France, Spain, Canada, Australia, and the United States to work under Spenlove and his staff. Its pupils included Eleanor Hughes, Sheila Scott Henderson and Constance Bradshaw. When Spenlove retired, the running of the School was taken over by Reginald Eves.
The original building in Beckenham was destroyed during World War II, and the school records were lost.
