Edinburgh Group

This Group was formed by a number of Scottish artists in Edinburgh in 1912. The original members included John Rankine Barclay, Hugh Cameron, William Mervyn Glass, William Oliphant Hutchison, Eric Robertson, John Whyte Somerville, John Guthrie Spence Smith, Alick Riddell Sturrock and David Macbeth Sutherland. They were later joined by Dorothy Johnstone, Mary Newbery and Adam Bruce Thomson. They held their first exhibition in Doig, Wilson and Wheatley's gallery in George Street, Edinburgh in 1913. This one-time prestigious gallery operated from 1895-1957 and staged many important exhibitions of Scottish artists. The following year 1914, they moved to the New Gallery in Shandwick Place, Edinburgh. The Group was dormant during World War I, but was revived in 1919 and subsequently held annual exhibitions. Over the years members of the Group dispersed and it finally disbanded in 1933.
