Fylingdales Group

The Fylingdales Group of Artists was formed in June 1925 spurred on by local artist Denton Hawley at his Robin Hood’s Bay studio. Originally it was restricted to 12 members but some years later it was increased to 22, the present number. Illustrious past members include Ethel Walker, Owen Bowen, Ulric Walmsley, Algernon Newton, Roland Hill, Florence Hess, Albert Pile, Fred Williams and Denton Hawley the organisations first Secretary. Many of the aforementioned were also associated with the Staithes Group. Initially exhibitions were staged at the Church Rooms, Robin Hood's Bay until 1939 but ceased during the hostilities of World War II. In 1952 the exhibitions moved to Pannett Art Gallery, Whitby which is still its annual exhibiting venue.
