Society of Mural Painters

Although formed in 1939, its first and as far as I can tell, only exhibition took place in London in 1950. This Society was founded to increase public interest in mural paintings, and to stimulate the use of mural paintings by public authorities, industrial organisations, architects and others who might be potential users.

Artist members included Mary Adshead, who from 1953 through the 1960's acted as the society's Secretary. Its first President was Augustus John. Other members included Francis Hastings, Barbara Jones, Henry Bird, Vanessa Bell, Kenneth Rowntree, Rupert Shephard, Robert Lyon, Evelyn Dunbar, Maurice Bradshaw, Peter Midgley and Laurence Scarfe.
