Lilliput

Lilliput was a small pocket size magazine reputedly created to fit neatly into the trench coat pocket during sentry duty for furtive reading. It often contained by the standards of the day suggestive pin-ups occasionally with saucy humour. Launched by exiled photo-journalist Stefan Lorant in 1937 it lost money in its first year and was sold to Edward Hulton. It ceased stand-alone publication in 1960 when it merged with Men Only. Lilliput Review, an American publication launched in 1989, is unrelated.

Its contributing authors are today considered amongst the literary giants of the 20th century. They include Julian Huxley, Stephen Spender, John Betjeman, Compton Mackenzie, Arthur Koestler, Bill Brandt, Robert Graves and Walter de la Mare. Its illustrators are equally important in the annals of 20th British art. Here are a few by name. James Boswell, James Holland, James Fitton, Osbert Lancaster, Michael Ffolkes, Eric Fraser, John Minton and Walter Trier.
