London Opinion

Arguably a very influential periodical yet comparatively little-known, it started publication March 1904 as a monthly digest. Perhaps its greatest and most famous cover was the September 1914 pointing figure of Lord Kitchener, the then Secretary of War responsible for the British war effort, with the words: 'Your Country Needs You.' The idea was taken up by the government in its recruitment campaign for war volunteers and was credited with encouraging three million men to sign up in the first two years of the war. The magazine was published by Pearson/Newnes and in 1940 took over its stable-mate Humorist. Writers and artists who contributed to London Opinion were Rowel Friers, Lewis Baumer, Arthur Ferrier, Keith Waterhouse, Alfred Leete and Norman Thelwell. It ceased publication in 1954 when it was taken over by Men Only.
