Rhythm Group

Founded in 1912 by J. D. Fergusson this was a group of artists who had worked in Paris and were much influenced by the bright energetic colours of the Fauve painters. Other members included Jessica Dismorr, S.J. Peploe and American artist Anne Estelle Rice. It published its eponymous journal Rhythm, created by John Middleton Murry writer and literary critic with Fergusson as its art editor. Soon after it began, writer Katherine Mansfield, Murry's wife, joined as assistant editor and contributor. Artists whose work was illustrated included Augustus John, Margaret Thompson, Henri Gaudier-Breszka, Jack B. Yeats, William Orpen, Horace Brodzky, and Albert Rothenstein, (later Rutherston).

The group exhibited together at the Stafford Galleries, London, in 1912 which is the only known exhibition they organised. In 1913 the magazine ceased publication and was revamped as the Blue Review but lasted only for 3 issues.

There was a Polish group of painters formed in 1922 also called the Rhythm Group. They are not connected.
