Snape Maltings

The Maltings, as it is commonly called, is a world-renowned arts complex located on the bank of the River Alde in Suffolk, England. Set in a converted Victorian maltings building, it is a hub for music and arts, and some shopping.
Known for its magnificent acoustics, it is one of the main locations for the annual Aldeburgh Festival. It has excellent art galleries affording visitors rotating exhibitions, and the location offers direct access to the Suffolk countryside and the River Alde.

The site was originally developed in the mid-19th century as a maltings for locally grown malting barley, which was then transported by barge to breweries. The malting business closed in 1965, and Benjamin Britten leased the largest building to convert it into the now-famous Concert Hall. Benjamin Britten and his partner Peter Pears founded the Aldeburgh Festival in 1948, and it became Britten Pears Arts in April 2020 when Snape Maltings, formerly Aldeburgh Music, and the Britten-Pears Foundation, merged.

The site is now under the ownership of what is now Britten Pears Arts. The gallery is dedicated to local and East Anglian paintings, ceramics, sculptures and jewellery. The Maltings site includes sculptures by Barbara Hepworth, Tracey Emin, Gary Hume, Sarah Lucas, Alison Mary Wilding, and Henry Moore.
