Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News

This publication was a weekly magazine that came into being in 1874. In 1944 it was reincarnated as the Sport and Country and in 1957 to the Farm and Country before finally ceasing publication in 1970. As its name shows it covered both sporting and theatrical action and also published stories often in serial form. Its main rival was the Illustrated London News and both publications often ‘shared’ the same artists and authors. Well-known illustrators for the former included Louis Wain, Frank R. Grey, David Henry Friston, Alfred Concanen, (1835-1886) and Alfred Bryan, (1852–1899). Notable authors such as Bram Stoker and Agatha Christie also had stories published.
